Bitter Sweet

The last twenty-four hours has been bitter sweet. Sweet because I had the time of my life at Government last night and also because we won our second volleyball game this morning. Bitter because all the issues I have with myself and my relationships have resurfaced and it's leaving me with very little self esteem.

Last night was the launch of Madonna's new album Confessions On A Dancefloor and Government was literally filled with bodies. Richie and the rest of the barkading were at Government way ahead of me because I had to meet Camille and Aileen in the uber straight Arruba Bar in Metrowalk. I didn't know I could have fun in a straight bar sans Richie after nearly five years of being out of my transparent closet, but to my surprise I had a great time. They say high school is the best time of your scholarly life and the friends you develop during that time are for keeps. Indeed, this rendez-vous with high school friends validated this.

When I got to Government I headed to the toilet to get rid of killer scotch seven I had at Arubba, but found myself ordering another one after flushing the previous out of my system. When I tried to follow Richie and the rest of the gang to the dancefloor, I shortly discovered it would be impossible on this night; there were just too many people. Thankfully, L.A., Mon, Jigs, Vince, and Omar arrived so we kept each other company on the second floor. I had to resort to texting Richie to inform him that we were on the top floor. During the entire night (er, morning) we were dancing the nightaway... too much dancing actually that my foot was starting to cramp. I was alarmed because I usually have cramps in the middle of the night after a long night of partying. I couldn't afford to have a cramp on this specific night because I was to coach a volleyball game four hours later. Since Anna is injured, I have to conduct all the court drills and this cramping foot would spell disaster.

It turns out there would be no cramping foot in the two hours of sleep that I had and no disaster; instead, we won our first game of the season (this is only our second game of the season--we lost the first). It's funny how accurate one's intuition is. At the beginning of the match, the referees hand out three pieces of paper with boxes where you place the starting line-up of each set; this is called an R-5. Anna, my assistant coach, asked me to sign an R-5 for the first set (to make the line-up official) and then says, sign all three R-5's so we don't have to do so in between sets. The moment I signed the third R-5, I had this gut feeling this was going to be a three-set thriller instead of my usual plan of straight sets victory.

We won the first set. The girls got extremely over confident in the first half of the second set which resulted in mild scolding. Shortly after the scolding, they got back on track but it was already too late to make a comeback. In all fairness, they tried their best to save the set, but I think they shaped up only cos they were afraid I would be furious. I can get very very angry and sometimes I am shocked at my behavior. I make all these protests, I make large hand and leg gestures, I throw and kick things, my face gets all scrunched up and NO ONE can talk to me.

Anna often calls me Bernardo Rezende, the former Brazilian coach, because I behave like him on the court. He gets very very emotional and tempermental. In previous years, I would fight with the referees, court assistants, and court officials, which is bad behavior because they are the gods of the match and they could give me really bad calls. This year, I promised myself that I'd have more control over my emotions and my temper. With great difficulty, I think I pretty much had control; though, I broke my service chart when I slammed it on the floor after reacting to bad ball handling error. He he he. But, we won the third set seamlessly cos the girls were on fire!

In my five years in AC, I'd have to say that the win today is second to the championship two years ago in terms of importance. The AC team has been having problems closing a set when we are down, and today I called two very crutial timeouts just to remind the girls of the solution to our problems. It wasn't even a technical or skill problem, it was more mental. Thankfully, we overcame the problems that plagued us in every match for the last five years, and I think the girls learned a huge lesson today. A lesson that will remain with them during their lifetime. I almost got emotional during the final huddle, but I held back. I didn't need tears of joy. The thought that we solved a major hurdle that they could not only apply to volleyball but also to their other problems left me with the feeling of satisfaction.

Pasta & Tea With L. Lo

I spent a late lunch with L.A. Lopez today in Alabang because I wanted to give him a copy of the Invasion issue and his tear sheets for the Film Strip editorial which he styled. I always like going to Alabang even if it’s quite a drive because the atmosphere is a great break from Makati and the ride makes for my favorite pastime—billboard analysis. I finally got to see the PAC billboard of Bruna that I did. It was interesting. But, what was more striking for me was the new F&H billboard of Claudine. I was disappointed at the photo selection because there was so many nice photos during that shoot that was more... well, billboard worthy.

Anyway, L.A. and I ate at our usual spot--Cibo Alabang Town Center. I had bolognese on linguine; he ate a tuna sandwich and we both drank mint iced tea. After lunch and maybe five cigarettes each, we had some afternoon tea--Camomile and Peppermint. It was a lot of fun. As he put it, it was an afternoon of pasta and tea with a side order of intrigue and chismis. Very very entertaining and a great break from my usual routine.

L.A. is probably one of my favorite stylists right after Gerry Santos because his taste is very similar to mine. This is his second editorial with ICON and I'm sure you'll see more of his work in future issues. This kid is someone you should watch out for, he's another hyphenate. A writer, stylist and personal shopper.

Delivery Boy

I spent the entire day yesterday meeting ICON’s suppliera, contributors, and advertisers because Richie, Angelo and I were delivering complimentary copies of the Invasion issue. For Richie, Angelo, and Xochi, this wasn’t a new experience because they do this after the release of every issue. Like a true Managing Editor, I spend most of my ICON time in the office, pulling out, shooting, meeting with our soon-to-be-famous Creative Director I-van, or closing page.

The long holiday was perfect because I was able to visit the Bench office, L’Oréal, Rustan’s, and ABS-CBN Talent Center to name a few (we also went to New Thinkers, Wolfpac, and OMD). I was finally able to put faces on people I interact with only on the phone or through email. I got to meet Shu Uemura’s Tessa Dragon, Kiehl’s Dione Cotoco, L’Oréal’s Andrew Tan and Prestige International’s Senior Product Manager Carlo Timoteo. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet Lacôme’s Zerl Chan. I also finally got to meet Bench’s Ana Pia Reyes and RCC’s Iñigo de Paula who was very very kind during the production of the current issue. Our last stop was ABS-CBN where I met Rafael Rosell’s handler Janice Damasco.

After visiting all the offices I came up with two realizations. I realized how different their lives are from mine even if we belong to one really small industry. And, I also realized that I LOVE what I’m doing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Last Song Syndrome

Richie and I were driving to Podium for ICON’s post-partum of the Invasion issue and planning for the January to March 2006 issue when I was caught by this über catchy song on the corner of EDSA and pioneer. I immediately liked the the beat, which is very rare because I usually have to listen to a new song twice or thrice before I like it. I didn’t like Madonna’s Hung Up instantly, but this song had such a gay vibe. I told Richie it was the Sugababes and true enough the DJ confirmed it. I knew I had to download it and since then, I’ve been playing it over and over: in my laptop, on my phone (thanks to Vince Uy who made it my ringtone), in Richie’s car and just today I download the video. The song is called Push The Button.

I’ve always been a fan of the Sugababes since I heared Round Round and Overload. I love the beats and their multi-racial combination. The album cover and lyrics are worth sharing.

Push the button [x4]

I'm busy throwing hints that he keeps missing
Don't have to think about it
I Wanna kiss and
Everything around it but he's too distant
I wanna feel his body
I can't resist it

I know my hidden looks can be deceiving
But how obvious should a girl be?
I was taken by the early conversation piece
And I really like the way that he respect me

I've been waiting patiently for him to come and get it
I wonder if he knows that he can say it and I'm with it
I knew I had my mind made up from the very beginning
Catch this opportunity so you and me could feel it 'cos

If you're ready for me boy
You'd better push the button and let me know
Before I get the wrong idea and go
You're gonna miss the freak that I control

I'm busy showing him what he's been missing
I'm kind of showing off for his full attention
My sexy ass has got him in the new dimension
I'm ready to do something to relieve this mission

After waiting patiently for him to come and get it
He came on through and asked me if I wanted to get with him
I knew I had my mind made up from the very beginning
Won't miss this opportunity so you and me could feel it 'cos

If you're ready for me boy
You'd better push the button and let me know
Before I get the wrong idea and go
You're gonna miss the freak that I control

If you're ready for me boy
You'd better push the button and let me know
Before I get the wrong idea and go
You're gonna miss the freak that I control

I've been dropping so many hints
You’re still not getting it
Now that you’ve heard everything I have to say
Where we gonna go from here?

After waiting patiently for him to come and get it
He came on through and asked me if I wanted to get with him
I knew I had my mind made up from the very beginning
Won't miss this opportunity so you and me could feel it 'cos

If you're ready for me boy
You'd better push the button and let me know
Before I get the wrong idea and go
You're gonna miss the freak that I control

If you're ready for me boy
You'd better push the button and let me know
Before I get the wrong idea and go
You're gonna miss the freak that I control
(I control)

If you're ready for me boy
(For me boy)
You'd better push the button and let me know
Before I get the wrong idea and go
You're gonna miss the freak that I control

Family Matters

Last Sunday, after a really really fun night at Government’s Hell Ball, my family and I went to Porac, Pampanga to visit my grandmother who’s buried at the church in the hacienda. We wanted to avoid the All Saints Day traffic on November 1, so we left really early in the morning. I had only slept for an hour after that unforgettable Halloween night when my mother woke me up for the trip. Because I was puyat, I opted to stay in the back of the car to catch up on my zzz’s. I closed my eyes the moment I got in the car and when I woke up, we were in Pampanga. The people in the highway must have known I was gay even if I was sleeping because I had an eye mask on. Our car doesn’t have tint!

We lit candles, brought flowers and offered prayers to my grandma. It was pretty uneventful but I enjoyed myself because I was able to spend time with my family which rarely happens.

Invasion

ICON’s newest issue Invasion is out in newsstands with the very hot Rafael Rosell on cover.

I must say this is my favorite issue not because it’s the latest issue but because the concept is really tight, the layout is consistent, and all the changes I wanted was finally carried out. So far, it was the most difficult issue to make. We experienced coordination problems and I also had so many plans that literally got rained on. But, in the end we were able to produce an issue with great editorials and stories that inspire.

I’m most proud of the cover and Film Strip because I did the final artwork for these pages. This issue is probably the one closest to my heart and a close runner-up is Maximum Exposure. I actually got very emotional during the final stages of closing week because I was frustrated at cover and at the difficulty of putting the entire issue together. I wanted it perfect and on time! But sometimes you have no control of things especially if you don't forsee problems.

On the other hand, Angelo was joking that this is the Suki issue because I have so many by lines. I was a writer, an art director, a creative director, and a stylist. It's just a running joke because I told him The Issue of Power was the Angelo issue. It really was! Check out all the Angelo Morales by lines and the A.M.'s.

Please, please grab a copy of the current issue and tell me what you think about it. Happy reading!
